Allergies

Nearly all of us today either know of someone, or have ourselves experienced the symptoms of Allergies.  Allergy experts agree that Allergies are on the increase, although the reasons as to why this may be the case, are not necessarily agreed on.  The symptoms of an allergy can vary significantly from individual to individual, from causing a minor irritation, to putting a person in a serious life threatening situation, as in the case of anaphylaxis.

So what is an allergy?

When our body’s immune system comes into contact with something that it perceives to be a threat, it produces antibodies, to fight the invader.  This is the body’s way of preventing the invader from harming us.  This is an amazing ability of the human body, and is a welcome resource when it comes to potential threats, such as viruses and bacteria.

Sometimes however, our immune system actually perceives harmless substances as posing a threat.  As a result, the body produces antibodies to fight against these harmless components.  The body produces antibodies, which cause the symptoms of an allergic reaction.  The individual may experience any number of symptoms.  Common allergy symptoms include digestive disturbances, eczema, nasal congestion, headaches, asthma.  The most serious symptom is analphylaxis, which can present extremely rapidly, and can be life threatening.
