Allergy Testing
Allergy Testing is available that can help an individual to
determine the cause of the allergy. These tests alone however, should
not be used in to make a diagnosis, but in conjunction with presenting
symptoms, as well as a patient’s complete medical history.
Skin prick testing. This involves placing drops of possible
allergens onto an individual’s skin, usually the lower forearm. The
arm is then pricked to allow the allergen to be introduced. Within 15
minutes, it is usually possible to see if an individual is developing
an allergic reaction, as a small itchy patch will appear. It is
important that you are well informed about what is involved with this
type of testing by a healthcare professional, as certain medications
can affect the results.
Blood testing, known as RAST (radioallergosorbent test). The
test measures the levels of allergic antibodies in the blood to
allergens. If the levels of these antibodies (known as IgE) are high
in the blood, it suggests that the individual is allergic.
Patch testing. This type of Allergy Testing is used
to test individuals with dermatitis. Small patches with the allergen
on them are placed on the skin (usually the back). These patches are
left in place for 48 hours. Once removed, the practitioner will look
for symptoms of an allergic reaction. The patient will also be
assessed again a few days later, to determine the extent to which a
person is allergic.
Elimination testing. This involves removing suspect foods
from the diet for several weeks, and then slowly reintroducing them.
During this time, the individual keeps a diary, writing down anything
the may indicate a reaction. After a period of time, foods are
reintroduced, one at a time, until again symptoms are observed. This
is quite an arduous procedure, and should be done with the guidance of
a professional healthcare practitioner.
These are also numerous holistic approaches to testing an individual
for allergies. Here are just a couple that are sometimes used.
Kinesiology. This involves asking the body through muscle
testing if there are any imbalances in the body. The practitioner can
test for specific allergens.
Vega testing. This involves measuring the body’s electro magnetic response to specific substances tested.
