Osteoporosis Symptoms
The biggest problem with diagnosing
osteoporosis, is that most often, individuals have no symptoms of the
condition at all. For this reason, it is sometimes know as the 'silent
disease'. An individual may get confirmation of the disease following
a fracture, that might have occurred following a fall, that under
normal circumstances, would not have led to a break. Sometimes a
fracture can cause severe pain, and other times it can go unnoticed, as
in the case of a fractured vertebra. The vertebrae can actually
collapse on themselves, resulting in a loss in height. The hunchback
appearance that some individuals have, known as a Dowager's hump, comes
about as a result of the collapse of the vertebrae. As osteoporosis
can be completely asymptomatic, it is a good idea for individuals to
educate themselves on ways to prevent osteoporosis from occurring,
rather than waiting for symptoms to present.
Osteoporosis Symptoms that may present include:
- Bone pain or tenderness
- Lower back pain
- Muscular pain, particularly in the lower back
- Neck pain
- Curvature of the upper (thoracic) part of the spine (Dowager’s Hump)
- A decrease in height
- Brittle finger nails
- Being diagnosed with osteopenia, which is having low bone density, or a thinning of the bones, is often considered to be a precursor to osteoporosis.
The Osteoporosis Symptoms outlined, can all occur in relation
to other health conditions aswell; therefore it is always important to
get a proper diagnosis from a professional healthcare practitioner.
Early detection and intervention can certainly help to slow down the
progression of this condition.
